Located near the old Canyon Meadows Reservoir, opportunities at this site include hiking, hunting, this rustic campground sets at the edge of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness . The reservoir no longer holds water. The campground has wood picnic tables and older fire rings.
From the town of John Day, OR., take US Highway 395 south approximately 9 miles to the junction of County Road 65. Follow County Road 65 for approximately 6 miles at which time the road becomes Forest Service Road 15, continue on Forest Service Road 15 for one mile to the junction with Forest Road 1520, follow Forest Road 1520 approximately 3 miles to the campground.
It's a beautiful hike but quite crowded. Parking lot was full by 8:45 a.m. in mid August. Mtn goats!!
We were directed here by a forest service worker who said that the wildflowers were in bloom, early June, and it was a spectacular hike to the base of Three Fingered Jack.
