Enjoy the scenic lookout from the Columnar Juniper area or the Ponderosa Pines just south and west of the campground.
The campground can be accessed from highway 85 approximately 10 miles south of Belfield, traveling 20 miles on gravel roads #767 and #742
Beautiful site and beautiful drive! If all you know of ND is east of the Missouri River, you definitely have to visit this place! Roads are very washboard and all clinker so drive accordingly.
The campground itself is primitive like most forest service or grassland campgrounds but it's location is also great like most. It's near some rare ND pine forest and of course the scenic little Missouri. Through and past the campground is a trailhead parking spot with a great view. The weather wasn't very agreeable while I was there but I'll be back.
The campground should be renamed Burnt Coal Vein Campground. Only after our visit did we learn that the fire in the nearby lignite vein went out years ago. Based on information easily available to us we found the campground and the nearby features shown in pictures. It s!ill was a nice ride on very good gravel roads.
I have always liked camping at this site whether in a tent or a camper. Always clean and well kept. Great for our SW North Dakota hunting excursions. I know it happened a long time ago but I really miss the shelters over the picnic tables.
