About Campground

Overview

Chewalla Lake Recreation Area is located in the Holly Springs Ranger District in northern Mississippi. Visitors enjoy swimming and relaxing on the sandy beach on the lake shore, as well as canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Recreation

Chewalla Lake covers 260 acres and is a no-wake lake, making it a perfect location for swimming, canoeing and kayaking. Anglers enjoy fishing for smallmouth bass, bream, crappie and catfish. A boat ramp is located on-site.

Facilities

DUE TO COVID THE RESTROOMS AND TENT CAMPING ARE UNAVAILABLE. The campground offers sites for RV camping. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. RV sites have electric and water hookups. During the season the campground is open 24 hours and does not close on the major holidays, i.e. Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, allowing families and friends to celebrate together. Don't fret if you happen to arrive later in the day or evening for your reservation we will leave a note up on the site showing that its reserved.

Natural Features

The lake is surrounded by a dense forest of pine and hardwoods, such as sweet gum and oak. Many dogwoods are scattered throughout the campground, creating a beautiful, blooming display in the springtime.

The campground lies on land once used heavily for farming. Erosion has caused deep gullies to form throughout the area, but split-rail fences line the gullies, adding character to the facility.

Nearby Attractions

Holly Springs is 8.5 miles northwest of the lake. This charming town is known as the Antebellum Capitol of the mid-south. More than 200 buildings in town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A variety of dining and shopping options are available, as well as grocery stores and gas stations.

Directions

In Holly Springs, Mississippi at the intersection of State Routes 4 and 7, take Route 4 east 1.4 miles to the Chewalla Lake sign. At the sign, bear right and go 5.7 miles to the Chewalla Lake Recreation Area sign (Forest Route 611/Chewalla Lake Road). Turn left at the sign and go 1.3 miles to the campground. Little piece of heaven, only thing i didn't like about it was not enough time to fully enjoy the beauty of God's creation and relax by the water side. This is a pinned spot on my map. I recommend take a detour to see this hidden jewel.

This was a very nice little spot to stop and take a break on our way traveling through. It had a boat ramp, fishing dock, and lots of nice camping spots. As well as regular bathrooms and a swimming spot. Was a very beautiful and serene spot. I imagine it is very underrated in the area. We definitely plan on coming back, but camping next time instead of just passing through.

Right off interstate 22 in Mississippi is Chewalla Lake campground which to my liking is 100% deserted. Approaching Labor Day weekend, Chuck, the head campground wrangler doesn't expect much more than a handful of occupants over the aforementioned holiday. Why you might ask would a beautiful USFS tree lined large lake in a quiet setting be so unceremoniously ignored by the adjacent traveling public? Part of the mystery is revealed when viewing the pine tree tomahawked bathrooms rendering showers and poopers inoperable to be replaced by lowly port a potties. In my world this is a feature not a bug if quiet enjoyment in a beautiful setting is preferred. Five stars.

Great campsite! Cheap primitive sites at $7 / night and really friendly and well intentioned camp host Chuck. You can tell there’s a lot of care for the land and continuous work improving storm damage. Definitely recommend staying!

Nice campground but the signs of previous damage are visible. Ranger said there was lots of wind storms and bad prior management and thus the outhouses are both out of order and temporary stalls have been placed. No showers because of this as of time of post but should be back sometime.

Aside from that the area is beautiful and lots of fallen wood for fires, white sand beach and bottomed lake that you can swim in. Something like a 6000 acre lake. Lots of fish and fishing activities.
