Kimball Lake Campground is a small campground that is excellent for people who want to camp and fish. Kimball Lake is a small state-managed trout lake stocked with rainbow trout. Because of this special designation, anglers are required to have a fishing license with a trout stamp. A non-maintained trail circles the lake for shore casting. Adjacent Mink Lake has a sand swimming beach and barrier free fishing pier. Downloadable information and map.
In Grand Marais, MN, at the intersection of State Rt. 61 and County Rt. 12 (Gunflint Trail), take County Rt. 12 north 10.9 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign onto Trout Lake Rd. (Forest Rt. 140), which is gravel, and go 1.5 miles to another campground sign. Turn right at sign into campground.
We had the worst experience, it rained our entire trip. Otherwise, it was a really nice campground. Would not recommend. Class A U.S. Forest Service campground with great sites
All the campgrounds up in this area are pretty simple but amazing with great views tucked into the forest. Be aware you are living with lots of wildlife and as long as your wise about your trash etc you shouldn't have any problems.
Just left our little campground. Great off the beaten path if you want remote car camping while visiting the north shore. Cleanest bathrooms, good fishing spots, water spigot with clean water, thimbleberry/raspberry bushes, pet friendly with plenty of room between sites. A bit rocky for tent stakes and yes there is still a fire ban, but it was a good time.
Kimball lake campground is a cozy little spot just up the gunflint. Plenty of space between the sites for a more outdoorsy experience. Great access to a trout lake and plenty of nature.
This place is small and quiet and makes for a peaceful camping experience. It I'd also one of the cleanest campgrounds I've been to. Even though we were there over a holiday weekend they made sure to keep all the concrete porta pottys clean and stocked with tp. The lake is beautiful with all kinds of wild life and a fun 2 mile trail that goes around the lake. It's not huge or well maintained but the amount of foot travel makes it easy to spot out and fun for you and your pups!
