Sweetest Ranger ever! Can't remember his name but deserves great credit. Welcoming smile, big pretty eyes, short brown hair!

The Ironton District is a beautiful forest in the rolling hills of southern Ohio. The campgrounds are large and roomy and surrounded by a forest, not an open field. This is a quiet forest with trails that are not crowded and beautiful wildflowers throughout the forest....botanically, a treasure. The lake is quiet and serene and clear with a mirror reflection of the forest that surrounds it. The District borders the Dean State Forest which is approximately 2800 acres of unbroken forest and is close to the Crown City Wildlife Area, an 11,000 acre wildlife area of reclaimed surface mine land so the birding there is wonderful, the District is approximately one hour from another richly botanical area of the Shawnee State Forest and to the north in Oak Hill Ohio is the Cooper Wildlife Area which is more of a wetland area. The entire tip of southern Ohio is rich in its forests and outdoor opportunities for the nature lover.

I grew up there swimming and canoeing in the lake, camping in the campgrounds and walking and backpacking the trails. Still do but I'm so much older now!! A real treasure that happens to be located in southern Ohio. The entire staff and volunteers there are top notch. Enjoy it and help care for it.
