About Campground

Overview: Fir Creek Campground is located along Forest Service Road 579 near the in beautiful but remote Bear Valley at an elevation of 6,400 feet. It is adjacent to the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness and scenic Elk Creek. Situated in a high mountain meadow dotted with Douglas fir and lodgepole pine amid the peaks of the Sawtooth Range, it is a perfect summer retreat. Deer, elk, moose, red squirrels, coyote and lynx all live in the area. The sounds of elk, coyote and wolf are often heard in the summer and fall months. In winter, wildlife enthusiasts can watch carefully for snowshoe hares or ermine with their white winter coats. Recreation: There is no shortage of trails in the area for ATV riding, mountain biking, horse-riding and hiking. Check on the Motor Vehicle Use Map for Lowman Range District for areas open to specific interests. For winter recreation, there are miles of groomed trails in the area offering excellent snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Skiers and snowshoers can enjoy a backcountry adventure in the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness, but snowmobiles are not allowed. Elk Creek Cabins are available at www.recreation.gov for a winter night stay.

Directions

From Boise, Idaho, travel north along State Highway 55 approximately 38 miles to Banks, Idaho. At Banks, turn right (east) onto State Highway 17 (Banks/Lowman Road) and travel to Lowman, Idaho approximately 31 miles At Lowman, turn left at the intersection of State Highway 17 and State Highway 21.  Proceed northeast towards Stanley, Idaho along State Highway 21 approximately 40 miles. Along the route, you will travel past Banner Summit, Bull Trout Campground and eventually arrive at the Forest Service (FS) Road 579 turnoff.  Turn (west) onto FS Road 579 at Banner Creek/Cape Horn Summit.  There is a big parking area and an information board. Proceed along FS Road 579 approximately 7 miles to the Fir Creek Campground.
