A nice spot for parking to hike on the early section of the Appalachian Trail. It's only accessible by forest service road so some clearance is recommended.
Nearest camp is at Hawk Mountain roughly .5 miles south on the AT. This is the first parking area though where vehicles can be left after the lot just north of Springer Mountain. Great place to leave a car if you want to do the first stretch of the AT. The Mountain access roads can be a bit rough getting here. Much easier and shorter to drive in from the south-east from Dahlonega than from the south-west. Can be done in a sedan but 4WD or AWD is certainly recommended.
Limited parking at this location but a great spot to set off north for Woody Gap or south for Springer. Expect to spend a very long drive (12+ miles one way) on forestry roads to get here, a vehicle with good ground clearance is needed.
Accessible by vehicle. They had a water buffalo here thankfully to refill on water. We camped here overnight to continue our Appalachian Trail trip. There is a nice spot, almost like a cave, where you can shelter yourself from the wind and have a nice fire.
