From Hilo, drive on Hwy. 11 south past Pahala, watching for the sign to the park on the left. The sign is small and comes up suddenly, so keep a close lookout. From Kona, drive south on Hwy. 11 south past Naalehu, watching for the sign on the right. The sign is small and comes up suddenly, so keep a close lookout.
This park is lovely & quiet. So many beautiful moments of nature to enjoy. Great for a picnic or a family day, a date or just quiet contemplation. The beach is lovely, but not for swimming. I keep coming back because it draws me in & isn't full of people.
Nice so to stretch your legs. Picnic tables and covered areas. Bathrooms are available but we're dirty when we were there. Interesting remnants of a pier there and the story is even more interesting. Check that out on the website
I accidentally found Whittington Beach Park as I was driving around the island. Overall the park was functional to enjoyable. My visit was on Super Bowl Sunday so that may have contributed to low park usage. Parking was located very conveniently. The 4 star rating was because I tried to use the outdoor sink and no water. There were three covered gathering areas covering about a picnic table. Those were all occupied. Incredible ocean views. Park is nestled between the green trees/grass-lava rock-deep blue ocean. Definitely a nice place to stop and have lunch.
No beaches, it’s all lava rock. There are some very nice tide pools worth visiting though. A few corals that you can snorkel to see!
Warm showers , turtles, great fishing, never crowded except weekends. Sneak across the highway for an incredible graffiti show at the old sugar mill. Or right next door through "Yellow gate" for some of the most incredible tide pools on the planet.
