The Himes Peak Campground has 11 campsites. It provides direct access to Big Fish Trail #1819, and hiking in the Flat Tops Wilderness. Fishing in nearby Rainbow Lake and Big Fish Lake is good. Elk hunting can be very good in season.
The Himes Peak Campground is 46 miles east of Meeker. From Meeker, take Colorado Highway 13 east for 1 mile, then turn right (east) on Rio Blanco County Road 8 and follow this for 39 miles. Turn south on Trappers Lake Road #205, and continue 6 miles to the Himes Peak Campground. The Big Fish Trailhead is on the left as you enter the campground.
Working for forestry service had to go there for a fire but still absolutely gorgeous
This campground was perfect! We had spot number 10 which was tucked away in a corner. The campground is very well kept up, bathrooms were spotless, it's a short hike to the river and beyond. For a quick weekend out, this campground was fabulous.
This has become my favorite camp ground. The wild flowers were beautiful. So many columbines. Small but sites are away from each other. The camp host, Matt and Jess were so friendly and they keep the place very clean. The bathrooms are immaculate. I want to go back this fall when colors change.
