The Gorge is about two miles northwest of the town of Auberry and is accessed by Smalley Road, off Power House Road, north of Auberry. The trail head and parking lot are on the Fresno County side of the San Joaquin River, about 6 miles downhill on Smalley Road from the entrance at Powerhouse Road.
I like the San Joaquin River Gorge nature area; it’s one of my favorite place for hiking. It’s beautiful in spring time with a lot of wild flowers. It’s good access to the hiking trial and 1 mile with the mountain and nature view to the bridge and the river. I like coming here to see the spring wild flowers.
Lots of up hill. The trail were marked very well. Some places were more Rockery, but challenging.
Easy hike down the river but little steep on way up …. The big boulders are slippery at times , so one needs to be careful
