Less than 2 miles from US Highway 191, this lightly used campground is shaded by large Gambel oak and sycamore trees. The area provides camping, water play and wildlife viewing.
Directions from Clifton: Upper Juan Campground is located 27 miles North of Clifton, AZ, via US Highway 191 and Forest Road 475.
It's peaceful, moderately easy access and shady. The only drawback to camping is there is no fish-able stream nearby. But if you're interested in hiking it's perfect. High enough altitude to be cool while not so high that the elevation is a problem. There is a clean outhouse for use, and some campground/picnic areas can accommodate tents. It is a fairly primitive site, with no camp host, and finding firewood might be an issue since cutting trees down is not allowed much in the area. Certain trees are forbidden, so know your trees! If you follow the road further, you find the Blue River which has a few places to camp. The river may have fish, for that I refer you to the Arizona Fish & Wildlife website. The terrain is interesting for the geology minded and the variety of plants is wide. Enjoy!
Pretty close to abandoned by the gov'ment, I'd say. I love it! You will have this place all to yourself, trust me. Great trees and birding!
