About Campground

The Herb Martyr trailhead, located near Herb Martyr campgound, is one of the popular birdwatching and overall hiking areas in Cave Creek Canyon. Though South Fork is known for its trogons, there are plenty of other interesting and rare creatures to encounter here. Over 300 species of birds have been sighted in the Chiricahua Mountains, including the magnificent hummingbird, blue-throated hummingbird and Montezuma quail. Other interesting types of wildlife frequently sighted here include Apache fox squirrels, coatimundis and Coues white-tailed deer. The scenery is quite impressive in this area, too.

This is a primitive campground and only for tents. The area is stunning and full of hiking trails. The area quiet and it is great for dark skies and bird watching.

Lots of lovely trails. A composting outhouse - clean. Amazing views. Road accessible during non-snow times in a regular car.

Lovely area. Only thing we didnt like was that the trash bins were full the whole 3 days we were there, and camp ground capacity was not enforced. Also, it has the fine powdery dirt that gets everywhere so be prepared for that too.

Stayed at campsite 2 away from other sites downhill. My honda fit had no issue getting to the site, road very well maintained. Bathroom clean, pretty spot by running stream with lots of cool birds. Quiet at night, was not disturbed. Would camp there again. Camping was $15/night but we had an annual pass so it was only $7.50.
