this was a great trip to take before fall sets in, beautiful lake look liked waterdogs floating around everywhere...
Death trap, maps saves the route into the campground, you lose all phone connection 30 miles from the lake, roads don’t exist anymore, some do and aren’t on the maps, there are MANY places to get stuck without a 4 wheel drive truck, dirt roads are terrible filled with rocks and hidden stumps.
The drive out to the lake can be deceiving, lots of big rocks on the various dirt roads you must take to get there. There are two pretty good campsites with a picnic table and campfire rings ( made from rocks not steel. There are a few other really primitive tent site but are ok. With a little work those sites could be great. Wild horses are around not much else as far as animals. This is Navajo country so it’s very quiet and dark at night. One of the google maps took us to someone’s house the guy was very nice but gave us lousy directions. We just switched our map to satellite on our phones and kind free styled it to find the campground. Very adventurous to get there and out of there. Be patient and give yourself plenty of daylight to find it. There are no signs to help find it. Everything is dirt roads. I would go back.
My little family stayed one night on 7/6/20. The lake is adorably small. It had a fair amount of water at that time. We saw another family staying on the other side and their kids played in the lake. I think the water amplified their noises as their activities seemed very loud late into the night. The weather was great and we slept without the rain fly on the tent. The bugs were plentiful, but we weren't bitten. We used bug spray. There's a few fire pits already built. There's also a picnic table. The drive in is not for low vehicles as the tracks are worn deep into the ground at some points. We drove a Jeep Compass and could hear the short plants scraping along the belly pan. There are free range (wild?) horses. We heard a little howling in the night. Didn't see any other animals. Lots of beautiful little flowers in bloom. I would stay here again.
