About Campground

Welcome to the 7D Ranch, Wyoming’s premiere family guest ranch since 1958. We have a smaller guest capacity than most, which allows us to provide individual and personalized care. The ranch’s 10 rustic cabins are tucked into the scenic and remote Sunlight Basin, 50 miles northwest of Cody, in the heart of the Absaroka Mountains.

Surrounded by national forest and just a short drive from Yellowstone National Park, the 7D offers a setting of extraordinary beauty. Whether you are looking for a great guest ranch vacation, a pack trip into Wyoming wilderness, or a Fall hunting trip, let our friendly family and staff provide you and yours with an experience of a lifetime.

Directions

From Cody, Wyoming (Approximately 50 miles)

A. At the intersection of 16th Street and Sheridan Avenue (main street), find the junction of Highways 14, 16, 20, and U.S. 14 A. Head north on 16th Street (U.S. 14A) for about ½ mile and then turn left onto Highway 120 toward Belfry, MT. Highway 120 crosses the Shoshone River just outside of Cody. Continue on Highway 120 for approximately 16 miles. Look for a sign that reads Chief Joseph Highway. Take an abrupt left hand onto Highway 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway).

B. Continue on Highway 296. After traveling approximately 14 miles, you will reach the summit of Dead Indian Pass. The summit provides a beautiful view onto the Sunlight Basin and is a wonderful spot for picture taking. Proceed on down the mountain and around seven switchbacks. At the bottom of the hill, continue past the U.S. Forest Service campground at Dead Indian Creek. As the paved road makes a sweeping curve to the right, watch for a green sign that reads Sunlight Road. Take a left turn onto the Sunlight Road – 7GQ (gravel road). (If you cross Sunlight River on a steel bridge 390 feet above the water, you have gone too far. If necessary, backtrack approximately 1/4 mile to the Sunlight Road.)

C. Continue on the gravel Sunlight Road for approximately 8 miles to the Sunlight Ranger Station. Proceed about ½ mile beyond the Ranger Station to the second narrow dirt road on the left, where you will see the 7D Ranch sign. Take that road through three pole gates to our corrals (on your left). Continue past the corrals into the ranch. The Main Lodge will be on your left and will be the building with the stone chimney.

**Allow 1.5 hours driving time.

This is a fabulous guest ranch in an idyllic setting. Meade and Andrea Dominick and their large staff do a fabulous job accommodating guests' varied needs and wishes. Although this is a horse-centric vacation with daily rides taking guests to high bluffs, ridge lines and through forests and across scenic rivers, there is much much more to do there than just ride horses. If you want a nice, family oriented, week away from the hustle bustle of work-a-day life, 7D Ranch will provide that and much much more. Go there for the scenery, fishing, riding, hiking, and relaxing (not to mention the fabulous food), and go back to see the friends you made the last time you visited. Our family has been there twice and we feel we are truly a part of the 7D family!

We've taken trips to 7D Ranch multiple times in the mid 2010's.

Every single time we felt comfortable in the complete remoteness, pampered while in the midst of ruggedness, and saw our little girl grow up in the experiences that were had on trail rides, excursions, and even hanging around the stables.

If you have children, you have little to worry about. The staff knows how to take care of them.

My personal favorite things:

1. Watching the wranglers bring the horses over the river

2. Having an eagle fly about 10 feet over our heads

3. Sunrise hike up to Memorial and then seeing a double-rainbow

4. Finding one of the first actual prints of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie in the lodge

I credit all this to the owners and the A+ staff members they hired. Best vacations we've ever had.

Been here 6 times (5 of those times in a row) and it has never gotten old. The land, the staff, the hiking, and the horse trails always meet everyone’s expectations. All of the various activities that are planned and that you get to choose are so much fun. The Copper Lake hike and fish trip is always so much fun and a great experience. The food is beyond amazing and at night you can check out the stars, have a fire, or stay cozy in your cabin relaxing. The experience is something out of this world and the fact that you are in the middle of no where makes the trip so much better.

Do not hesitate, you will be very happy to have booked this vacation. All three of my teenagers asked us to book this again after the first day. We were placed in two separate cabins, our three children had a 2 bedroom which made my only daughter pleased to have her own room away from her brothers. My husband and I loved our creekside cabin for just the two of us. The staff are extremely friendly and made sure to make us all feel comfortable and welcomed. After asking the children their favorite day it was interesting to hear it was the line dancing evening. We did not think they would get up to dance, so it was surprising and great to see them dancing with staff, family and friends. The never ending cookie jar was quite the hit. Our return cannot be soon enough.
