Hop off the Train at the Spencer Whistle Stop! Take a tour with a Forest Service interpreter around the foot of Spencer Lake and then float among the icebergs that have calved off of the great glacier while the guide steers an Alaskan Native canoe. Or take a leisurely journey by raft down the Placer River toward Turnagain Arm.
Amazing view of Spencer Glacier is so close. If you go by the raft you can get even closer. Take Alaska Glacier Discovery train which started running 5/29/21 after Winter to Spencer Glacier whistle stop. Trail to the glacier is flat and easy access for 2.5 miles round trip.
Amazing trip, road in on the train with some close friends. We hiked back to the lake and set up camp. Spent a lot of time on the lake in single person rafts and we paddled our way to Spencer Glacier where we took loads of photos. It is a must see experience for everyone!
1.3 mile hike to the glacier and 1.3 back. Add the rafts to float up to icebergs and touch them!
I love the place. Its only accessible by the Alaska Railroad. Going camping and hiking around Spencer Glacier.
