About Campground

Named after the nearby historic copper mine site, White Pine Extension Outpost is a small, eight-site rustic campground located a couple of miles from Summit Peak Scenic Area. It offers solitude and a camping experience unlike a typical state park modern campground. The sites are ideal for tent, van or compact campers.

There is a vault toilet, but no running water is available at any of the outpost campgrounds. You can access water at the park headquarters or visitor center.

Park roads close Dec. 1 through late spring. Specifically, County Road M-107 closes at the Whitetail parking area and South Boundary Road closes at Headquarters Road south to the Pinkerton Trailhead. You can still access Presque Isle scenic area by traveling north on County Road 519 just east of Wakefield. Both roads transition to designated snowmobile trails during the snowmobile season and remain closed until deemed safe to travel by the Ontonagon County Road Commission.

Great little campground! Fairly private sights and an outhouse. What more could you want? Plenty of trees for hammocks.

This is an incredibly beautiful national wilderness area nestled right next to Lake Superior. I give this a 5 out of 5 stars in Beauty.

The reasons I'm giving this location a 3 out of 5 stars is because your campsite is right next to the road depending on which site you get. Traffic isn't too bad at night, but can be over bearing during the day. We stayed 3 days (2 nights). Around 4:30 in the morning on the first night we were woke up to loud banging and loud talking and laughing. The people camping behind us were leaving and had no respect for us or any other campers there. Not sure if we were the only ones that got woke up but it was very rude and inconsiderate.

Great relaxing camp site, has a picnic table, fire Ring, trash can, and restroom camp site number#6 is the best sight there. They don't offer water or electricity.

Fantastic park...but it sucks (blood). We really enjoyed the trails, hikes, and waterfalls. However, we camped here in June and the mosquitoes were so bad that we could not be outside our trailer for more than a few minutes. Therefore, we ended up spending most of our time on the beach. Great beach...beautiful weather, lots of sand, and we could even build a fire and cook. Our van also broke down, the staff were super friendly. They helped where they could, including jumping the van and moving our pop up off site and into storage at no cost. We'd go back, but either stay at the main campground near the beach or later in the year.
