The elevation of Skipout Campground is 2,100 feet. Twelve camping units are available for public use.
In Reydon, OK, at intersection of State Rts. 47 East/30 South/47 West, take Rt. 47 east 4.9 to Skipout Lake sign. Turn left after sign onto RMNS 175 and go 0.5 miles to campground sign. Turn left into campground.
Perfect for astronomy/astrophotography. Not a very well-known site for these persuits, but it's only 45 minutes from hotels in Elk City and Shamrock. Very well-maintained place with good facilities (tables, parking, etc) and not too far from civilization if you get into trouble or need emergency services. Attached is an unprocessed image of Andromeda, 10-second exposure through a telescope running at f/7.5 and no LPR filter. Highly recommend if you're passing through Oklahoma on I-40 and want to see actual dark skies relatively free of light pollution.
This is one of the nicest free campsites I've been to so far. There is a pair of geese with 7 goslings, and a skinny turkey that visits. I even find some wild spinach and lots of dandelion greens for lunch.
My dogs have found a couple of stickers leftover from last year but this years crop are not mature yet. The grass was recently mowed and the privies are clean. There are several nicely shaded areas after the noon sun.
The locals come through during the week. Some for fishing, some for a swim.
There have been a couple other long term campers, and a few come and go over the weekend.
I've been here for a little over a week and plan on taking advantage of the full 14 days.
Beautiful area, accessible campsites, nice tables & firepit. Trash receptacle nearby and potable water spout...some trails. Gorgeous view of the sunset! So happy to experience this place🥰
