The park is situated in the middle of 14,000 plus acres of forest. We have a 56 acre lake with pedal boats and row boats. There are miles of hiking trails that meander through the forest. It is a great place to get back to nature. We also have an 18 hole golf course, tennis and basketball court, and a lodge with a full service dinning room.
Equine Camping:
Pennyrile Forest offers 8 pull-through campsites specifically designed for horse owners. These sites feature electric, water and sewer hook-ups. Each site has its own corresponding hitching posts for up to four horses, picnic table, lantern hanger & fire ring/grill combo. Horse campers have access to all campground amenities, which include bathhouses, laundry area and playgrounds. A new 1.25 mile horse trail near the campground connects horseback riders to the 40+ miles of horse trails on the adjacent Pennyrile State Forest.
Pennyrile Forest is located in Western Kentucky. From the Western Kentucky Parkway take exit 24 to Hwy 109 south and follow to Pennyrile entrance about 7 miles outside Dawson Springs.
A standard campsite is $20 Sun. - Thurs, $25 Fri. - Sat. and $30 on holidays. Equestrian sites are $35 Sun. - Thurs., $40 Fri - Sat, and $45 during holidays. You do not have to have a horse to camp at the equestrian sites, they are larger and our newer sites. There is a $6 reservation fee when booking through Reserve America.
1st off, we came in Nov, but it was 80 degrees! BEAUTIFUL scenery & hiking. The holiday decor was nice, but the grounds really need TLC and some repairs and more bug control in & outside the lodge rooms. (Bad ladybug infestation, that time of year, I guess.) We will return to rent one of the lakeside cabins, for sure!
The wi-fi could have been more efficient but the rooms in the lodge were clean (no refrigerators or microwaves) and the beds were comfortable. The grounds were amazing and there was so much to see and do. Not much around by way of food. 15 minutes from Dawsone Springs, KY and about 20-30 from Hopkinsville. Excellent place to stay and adventure. The lodge had a decent restaurant with limited hours and offered a basic breakfast.
The cabin was clean for the most part. There was one stain on the sheets in the one of the bedrooms. Kitchen was very very small, and there was odd number of chairs for a cabin that sleeps so many. We lost power at one point. For about a hour or so, honestly was not bad. Quick walking distance, hiking trail, from the swimming whole area. Very kids and family friendly.
I cannot review the rooms because we didn't stay there. However, the THANKSGIVING BUFFET that my family enjoyed was SUPERB. I was blown away at how much of the food was HOMEMADE and not off a truck or out of a box!! The amount of food that was available was outstanding. There was a full salad bar, fried fish/hushpuppies, rolls, a ton of homemade desserts, ice cream, the hot food bar.....it was just incredible. Workers were pleasant and seemed happy to be there on a holiday working to make guests holiday meal enjoyable. I will for sure be coming back for future Thanksgiving meals. Thank you Pennyrile!!!!!!!
Probably my favorite state park! Views, serenity and ambiance are unparalleled- just breath taking. Trails for hiking, horses are incredible- golf course is unique as the 9 holes are classic vs modern - Highly recommend a visit here!
