If you’re looking for someplace to camp on a beach where you can enjoy stunning mountain views, glorious sunsets, and whales dancing on the waves—all from right outside your tent’s door—look no further than Alaska’s Homer Spit. Located 230 miles southwest of Anchorage, where Alaska’s Highway 1 ends on a tiny finger of land extending out into Kachemak Bay, this oceanfront retreat rewards those who make the effort to get here. Nature lovers will relish the eagle and wildlife watching, anglers can cast for epic halibut and salmon catches, and foodies will enjoy the village’s farmers’ market and many eateries and art galleries.
The campground at Homer Spit features 122 campsites where tent and RV campers can make themselves at home across the bay from the glacier-capped peaks of Kenai Peninsula. Campsite options include beachfront tent sites (no hookups), beach view RV sites with electrical hookups, and interior tent and RV sites with electrical or full hookups. Most sites are equipped with picnic tables, and all have access to drinking water, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and a dump station. The campground has Wifi service, and is within walking distance of most of the town’s shops and restaurants. Sites can accommodate vehicles/trailers up to 40 feet. Rates range from $30–$50/night; reservations recommended.
Known as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” anglers can fish from the end of the spit or charter a boat for fishing offshore. No gear, no problem. Many fishing outfitters rent and sell fishing gear. Several wildlife watching tours are available, including tours by air for whale and bear viewing. After a day on the bay, enjoy food and beverages at the world-famous Salty Dawg Saloon, or live music and dancing at Alice’s Champagne Palace. There’s also a few local breweries and a winery for sampling some of the local elixirs. Homer also hosts a variety of fun and flavorful events through the summer worth checking out.

My daughter and I camped here for two nights. It was amazing and we will definitely be back. The bathrooms were always stocked and clean, the staff was super helpful and friendly, and the sites(we were at a tent site) were clean and ample. It’s a little more expensive than some campgrounds we’ve stayed at, but you are literally ON the beach and at the end of the spit with an unbeatable view. I honestly don’t mind paying a little more for that. Also, the sites are very close together, yes, but that didn’t bother us either. You camp there for the view and the convenience of being able to walk to all the shops and restaurants on the spit, and it’s perfect for that.
Great location at the end of the Spit. The CG is within easy walking distance of many of the shops and restaurants on the Spit. The office staff is friendly and helpful. Some sites have electricity, which was a nice break from dry camping. The sites have picnic tables, fire pits and were wide enough to open the slides on both sides of the RV. We didn’t use the showers or laundry facilities, so can’t comment on that. For a private campground, it’s not bad; we’ve definitely stayed in more cramped private campgrounds. The price was comparable to campgrounds that we’ve stayed in in the lower 48 during the high season. We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay here again. We were in a 30’ motor home.
Camping on the spit was all dry camping, but the price was $30 per night. All gravel. And that price does not include use of the dump/water station. Overall, the location is amazing. Traffic is horrible. There are lots of people fishing at the hole, which was fun. Be prepared for listening to lots of generators all night long. Yes, there are quiet hours, but not everyone seems to care about rules. Would I stay again? Absolutely!
Beautiful spot on a wonderful campground! Excellent showers (hotel worthy), excellent beach front spots right on the Homer spit, surrounded by the mountains. The staff was super helpful and friendly (and funny). Highly recommend.
Best showers! Prices seem to change based on supply and demand. Yes, it’s a gravel lot but bathrooms, water and showers all good. We paid $40 to dry camp. Reserve early for a beachfront site.
