About Campground

The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (HCNRA) straddles both sides of the Snake River in both Oregon and Idaho. The recreation sites and trails in this section are all found away from the Wild and Scenic Snake River in the Oregon uplands, and in other forest lands near the Wallowa Valley. All other upland sites and all trails in the Hells Canyon NRA - Snake River, or Hells Canyon NRA - Idahoare found in those recreation area sections. Popular recreation areas include the Hells Canyon Wilderness (Oregon), Hat Point, Hells Canyon Overlook, Imnaha Wild and Scenic River and adjacent campgrounds, and Lord Flat. Local Oregon communities that have a variety of services (i.e. fuel, lodging, stores and/or restaurants) are Enterprise, Joseph, Imnaha, Halfway, and Pine Creek. These communities are within one hour of the recreation area.

Amazingly spectacular place to visit.

Well worth the visit.

We visited in spring time, with the hills starting to turn green and not many visitors so not much traffic which makes for a better experience.

Very impressive at the amount of work that went in to building the dam.

I lived in Hells Canyon , Oxbow village actually for 13 years while my father supervised the building of the 3 dams. For a tomboy it was heaven, fishing, hiking, riding horses, hunting, finding arrowheads ... Heaven in beautiful rugged Hells Canyon!!!!!!

The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, in the remote northeast corner of Oregon, is part of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and is between the borders of northeastern Oregon and western Idaho. The area encompasses 652,488 scenic acres and over 900 miles of trails. In its deepest part, Hells Canyon drops 8,000 feet to the Snake River, making it the deepest river gorge in North America.

Hells Canyon must be one of the most remote places in the Pacific Northwest you can dare to venture in. The canyon is spectacular and lives up to its grandeur as being the deepest river gorge in North America. I only saw a small glimpse of the area while on my trip, but I could see that the canyon went on for miles. This is certainly a place I plan to explore further, especially the famed Seven Devils. I would recommend Hells Canyon as a top hiking and photography destination in Oregon and since the area is so vast, you truly can pick any adventure you like and make it your own. With its mountain vistas and steep canyon drops, Hells Canyon is prime for landscape photographers looking for dramatic skies and unrestrained views. I encourage you to explore Oregon and make your own adventure.
