Fort Mountain State Park is a place of legends. Literally! Home to an mysterious, ancient, rock wall at the peak of a mountain, Fort Mountain’s associated legends include the construction of a Welsh military fort, a honeymoon destination for native newlyweds, and a relation to “moon-eyed people” of Cherokee folklore. Whatever the truth may be, there is no denying that this park’s unique features have made it one of the major draws within the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Located just a short scenic drive off of Highway 52 near the Cohuatta Wilderness, the campground at Fort Mountain State Park hosts 70 campsites for tents and RVs. Campers can bring their paddles to take advantage of all 17 acres of Fort Mountain Lake, or take part in the local rental program for easier travels.
While there is no need to leave the park to find adventure, many campers take a short drive east to a historic site featuring the Chief Vann House. This well-preserved structure was the first Cherokee brick residence and is often referred to as the “showplace” of the Cherokee Nation. Continue your travels to the peak of Fort Mountain where you can take a tour of a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Enjoy panoramic views and marvel at the legendary beauty of Fort Mountain State Park.
What a peaceful and beautiful place!! This whole campground is nice as a while but compared to other state campgrounds this one doesn't get much attention. The roads throughout are in need of some repairs!
Only one washer and dryer for the whole place, if you're staying lakeside you have to go to the other campground. The yellow papers hanging have been there for 3-4 days and still all the old campers are hanging there. There are electric panel covers hanging with 1 hinge and going to get rain in them. Not one sighting of any of the hosts.
The older couple that cleans the bathrooms do a fantastic job and the bathhouses are super clean.
The Putt Putt ( which needs some attention), paddle boat rental and concession at the lake is only open from Thursday -Sunday which is a bummer.
The staff in the front office are very polite and helpful.
One huge negative is the lack of wifi or cell service of any kind, which some campers may prefer.
The playground for the kids is very nice with plenty of swings and slides, the rock wall is a nice touch!
We will definitely come back.
Fort Mountain is great and has things to do in all seasons. Hiking trails are open year around and in the warmer months there’s a lakeside beach and pedal boats available.
Beautiful scenic point, hike was not bad as well. Air get thinner on the top, hiking boats are must.
Definitely recommend.
Love this place and highly recommend for anyone visiting Ellijay, GA. Winding road up is winding in some places offering great photo ops, especially in the fall, peak being late October into November. Park with lake is very picturesque. Can rent paddle boats to go around lake. Can rent cabins or bring RV camper to camp grounds, children's playground, picnic area, and pet friendly.
This is one of the best mountains in Georgia, a nice relaxing hike around a mile in length at the top of the mountain.
With day use area, camping, and a lake at the bottom.
If you haven’t been put it near the top of your list 🪴
