It's unbelievable how unorginazed this place is. Can only buy wood permits over the phone, but how can we if nobody ever answers the freaking phone!!!
This is not a review of the forest, which is great, but of the rangers that keep it closed so much of the time. Months after a fire that didn't threaten most trails or threaten flooding for most of this area, most roads, trails, and parking areas were still marked closed. They were officially closed much longer than necessary, and when the official closures were rescinded, nobody took down the signs and barriers. Most everything is closed again for the winter now, except the wilderness roads where people go to get stuck in the snow (and rescued by the fire department, not the rangers).
I spoke to the absolute nastiest ranger on the phone a moment ago. She was rude enough that I thought to leave a review.
Among other things I said “I’m not from the area so I’m interested in doing xyz in the park” and she cut me off to say “it’s a national forest, so get that straight first of all. Secondly the forest is closed till April so you’re wasting your time coming here”
Dumpsters are overflowing with garbage. Ive observed this in many campsites and hiking areas along Highway 4. When I drove by the Spanish Queen fishing/camping area on Sunday, from the road I could see the dumpster overflowing. I drove by on Tuesday it hadn't been emptied yet. The area is neglected. It wasn't like this before what I don't know maybe the have new 'management'. Beautiful area. They need to do their freaking jobs
